What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is the second largest system of medicine in the world. It has been in use for over 250 years and was founded by Samuel Hahnemann.

Homeopathy is a holistic therapeutic system which treats both the mind and body. It is based on the principle of 'like treats like' and that a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy individual, can be used to treat an individual suffering with those same symptoms. For example, coffee that is known to keep people alert (awake) can be used to treat insomnia, and onions which, when cut, can bring on burning, watery eyes, runny nose and sneezing, can be used to treat hay fever and colds.

About the Medicines

Individualised Treatment

There are several thousand homeopathic medicines available from dedicated pharmacies. They are not prescribed in their crude form, but are specially prepared, highly dilute substances given in single, minute doses, usually in tablet or liquid form (tincture).

The role of the homeopath is to prescribe the correct remedy for the patient. We are all individuals and we respond differently to all manner of factors: foods; climate; pollen; emotions etc., and with that in mind, the medicine used to treat an individual, needs to be tailored specifically to them.

If several patients are booked into clinic with tonsillitis, it would be very rare for them all to be given the same homeopathic medicine. An understanding of the individual and how their tonsillitis is presenting, is necessary in order to take a medicine and match it to their needs. This process changes a mere medicine into a specifically chosen remedy. The correct remedy acts as a catalyst to raise the individual's vital force and allow the body to begin to heal.

What Can Homeopathy Treat?

Homeopathy can assist with a multitude of conditions that affect either the mind, the body or both. Many of the medicines work on several body systems at the same time.
